Mission Startup to Miami 2023: a new opportunity for the Valencian ecosystem in the US

Valencian startups have a new opportunity to make themselves known in the US market and generate business in America through the new mission to Miami that Startup Valencia is launching from the 16th to the 23rd of April of 2023 through Hospitality Ventures.

This action aims to build a real business bridge between the Valencian Community and MiamiAmong the meetings scheduled throughout this international mission are visits to the main VCs, lawyers, banks, accelerators and other potential business partners in the area. Time has also been allocated for networking and leisure activities, so that participants can live the full Miami experience.

Startups from the Valencian ecosystem will also be able to showcase their projects, knowledge and technologies to give a boost to their internationalisation strategy.

A total of 15 startups will be selected to take part in this mission, and they must meet a series of requirements: they must have a tech background, be in their growth phase, and have developed an innovative solution.

As Nacho Mas, CEO of Startup Valencia, explains, "Through this mission we want to promote those startups that consider the United States and Latin America to be potential markets for their products and services, and destinations in which to establish part of their company or in which to seek investment from large funds".

Valencia-Miami, connected cities

This new mission to Miami comes after the success of the one held in October this year. On that occasion, 18 startups had the chance to explore the business opportunities offered by the East Coast of the US and visit important international investors such as Genesis Ventures, Taram Capital, Animo VC, The Venture City, Key International, Gold Coast Angel Investors, Silicon Valley Bank, Microsoft for Startups, Salesforce Ventures, Amazon AWS and several family offices.

Startup Valencia had already been promoting the connection between both ecosystems through actions such as the Miami Valencia Forum, held within the framework of Valencia Digital Summit 2021, which launched a collaboration channel between the hubs of both cities to facilitate the exchange of talent and investment and promote international business opportunities.

Startup Valencia presents the keys to scaling the Valencian ecosystem internationally in 2023

Startup Valencia has set itself the goal for 2023 of scaling the Valencian ecosystem internationally, and has presented the keys to achieve this during the celebration of its General Assembly of Members. The meeting took place yesterday at the Veles e Vents venue in the Marina de Valencia, and preceded the Startup Night, which brought together more than 300 agents from the tech and innovation ecosystem to celebrate the achievements of the year.

The reach of Valencia Digital Summit and the international prestige it gained were presented as fundamental factors in the consolidation of the Valencian innovation ecosystem as a European benchmark

The development of the startup tech hub project in the Marina de Valencia is another of the challenges that the association has set itself for the coming year. As Juan Luis Hortelano, president of Startup Valencia, explained: "The creation of this space will be a key factor in positioning Valencia as a leading tech hub in southern Europe by attracting talent and investment that will facilitate the scaling of our projects and allow us to house more and more unicorns over time".

The Assembly also reasserted its eagerness to promote the internationalisation of the ecosystem. To this end, bilateral relations with the United States and Latin America will be strengthened through the business bridge established with Miami’s tech investment hub, allowing Valencian startups to play a leading role in the eMerge Americas event.

Moreover, the incorporation of Virginia Sánchez into Startup Valencia’s Board of Directors was announced. Sánchez has extensive experience in entrepreneurship and business development, helping talented entrepreneurs design new business models and grow their companies. In recent years she has focused on impact generation, as she believes that companies are a good tool to improve the future. She connects talented people with those who can help them accelerate their path to success and reduce the risks of entrepreneurship. She also makes investments as a business angel and has been part of the investment committee of Zubi Capital, an organisation that creates and invests in companies with social and environmental impact, identifying business opportunities, challenges to solve, creating teams and accompanying them in the creation of startups from scratch.

The incorporation of Virginia Sánchez means the board is now made up of the following members: Juan Luis Hortelano, the President; Javier Megias, the Vice-President; Jaime Esteban, the Treasurer; Judith Saladrigas, the Secretary, and Ángel Alberich-Bayarri, Juan Cartagena, Antonio Huerta, Iker Marcaide, Juan Martínez Climent, Fernando Marzal, Paloma Mas Pellicer, Virginia Sánchez, Diego Moya and Eduardo Nebot.

Valencia Digital Summit neutralises its carbon footprint through ClimateTrade’s blockchain platform

Valencia Digital Summit (VDS), the international flagship event of the Valencian innovation ecosystem hosted yearly by Startup Valencia that celebrated its fifth edition at the end of October, has officially become a carbon neutral event after offsetting 90 tonnes of CO thanks to its collaboration with ClimateTrade, Green Partner of VDS2022.

To calculate its carbon footprint, ClimateTrade followed the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which requires measuring all six types of greenhouse gases (CO, CH₄, NO, HFC, PFC and SF6) and took into account the presence of more than 12,000 attendees from 70 different countries, 450 speakers and more than 400 investors, as well as the means of transport used by each of them to reach the City of Arts and Sciences (the venue for VDS2022) and the energy used to power the three days of the international tech event.

These emissions will be offset by Startup Valencia through 'VTRM Renewable Energy 2′. This is a cluster project, located in Brazil, which consists of the planning and building of renewable energy power plants. These installations reduce greenhouse gas emissions and displace the use of fossil fuels when generating electricity. They also contribute to the sustainable development of the region where they are located, as they stimulate the economy, improve the area's infrastructure, promote skilled employment and generate income for the landowners, who can diversify the productivity of the land.

The entire offsetting process is guaranteed by ClimateTrade's blockchain platform, as its credits are 100% traceable. Moreover, this activity is reflected in a personalised certificate with information about the chosen project. This transparency guarantees the positive impact of carbon offsetting for the planet.

"Sustainability was one of the strategic pillars of the fifth edition of the Valencia Digital Summit, a convention that gives the Valencian entrepreneurial ecosystem a platform to showcase to the world how technology, innovation and digitalisation are inspiring a better future for both society and the planet," explains Juan Luis Hortelano, president of Startup Valencia. "Thanks to the compensation of its carbon footprint, VDS also becomes a symbol of commitment to the environment and a tech event that responds positively to the great social challenges at a global level", he points out.

According to Francisco Benedito, CEO of ClimateTrade, "It is a pleasure to support the carbon neutrality of this tech event with which we have been collaborating for years as part of the startup ecosystem of the Valencian Community. With this initiative, Valencia Digital Summit is positioned as a benchmark not only in innovation, but also in sustainability".

An international tech event

VDS2022 served to showcase and highlight the innovative solutions being developed in the Valencian Community, as well as to highlight the talent and technology being generated in the region. It allowed prominent national and international investors, with a portfolio of more than €6 billion to invest in the coming year, as well as CEOs and founders of the world's leading multinationals, to home in on the Valencian entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The fifth edition of Valencia Digital Summit counted on the support of the public administration, both local and regional. The Generalitat Valenciana, Valencia City Council, Valencia Activa, Las Naves, Diputación de Valencia and Valencian Finance Institute were involved in VDS2022 to demonstrate their commitment to the Valencian innovation ecosystem and to boost its dynamism.

valencia digital summit aerospace industry

Valencia Digital Summit will consolidate the valencian aerospace industry’s position at the international level

The aerospace industry and the Valencian Region’s potential for supporting its development will be one of the main topics to be explored at Valencia Digital Summit (VDS2022). The fifth edition of the international tech event of the Valencian innovation ecosystem, featuring conferences and an exhibition area on the 25th and 26th of October at the City of Arts and Sciences, will host a forum, designed in collaboration with AEROCAS (Castellón Airport), to publicise the progress that start-ups, research centres, universities and institutions of the region are already making in the aerospace field.

The incentives offered to the aerospace sector by the Valencian Community and the foundations for the development of the industry, as well as success stories of Valencian companies, will be presented over the course of three sessions on the 26th of October. The first talk, "The Valencian Community, a region of opportunity for the aerospace sector", will be given by Empar Martínez, regional secretary for the Regional Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Labour, and Blanca Marín, general director of Castellón Airport. During the session, the strengths of the Valencian Community with regard to the support and development of aerospace projects will be discussed

The second session will focus on explaining how this particular Valencian sector is carving out a niche for itself in the Spanish aerospace industry and what the foundations supporting this development are. The region has already carried through outstanding projects in this field. For example, Elche-based startup PLD Space is the first private European micro-launcher company to have successfully completed a flight test, which it did with the MIURA1: a rocket entirely manufactured in Elche. It is also worth mentioning Nax Solutions, which has revolutionised the agri-food sector by reducing its environmental impact through intelligent models based on information received from satellites.

Under the title "Foundations for the development of the aerospace industry in the region", a platform will be given to key players in the evolution of the sector in the Valencian Community from institutions such as the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Aeronáuticos de España (COIAE-AIAE), as well as from entities such as Espai Aero and Val Space Consortium, to express their views and explain their role.

Lastly, the backgrounds of several Valencian companies that are already making headway in the sector will shed light on the present and future of the industry in the region. Among the success stories that will be presented in the section of "Success stories of Valencian aerospace companies", Arkadia Space’s, one of the 10 finalists of VDS2022 Startup Competition, stands out.

This particular tech company is based in Castellón Airport and focuses on the development and commercialisation of propulsion systems and engines powered by sustainable fuels for satellites and space vehicles. The main innovation of these engines is that, unlike most traditional propulsion systems, they do not use toxic and carcinogenic fuels, but instead use highly-concentrated hydrogen peroxide as their fuel of choice. This is what allows them to offer the same performance as traditional engines at a reduced cost of 60% compared to traditional engines.

This startup is in the process of closing a seed round in early 2023 and plans to put into operation and commercialise its first product that same year.

For Juan Luis Hortelano, president of Startup Valencia, the development of this forum is a reflection of the innovation potential of the Valencian ecosystem and its capacity to generate value and competitiveness in any sector. "The sum of talent and entrepreneurship that we treasure in the Valencian Community allows for disruptive sectors such as the aerospace industry to take off and bolster their position on the international scene".

Great perspectives

Under the slogan 'Inspiring the Good Future', Valencia Digital Summit 2022 will showcase how technology, innovation and digitalisation are building a better future and why they are key to tackling the main social and economic challenges facing society.

In this fifth edition, entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to showcase their projects to the more than 10,000 people expected this year. The event will feature more than 300 presentations by national and international leaders of renowned prestige. In addition, it will bring together more than 150 corporations and more than 1,500 startups.

Entry to Valencia Digital Summit is completely free with prior registration through the website. At the event, attendees will be able to enjoy exhibition areas showcasing the latest trends, tech innovations and disruptive products by means of interactive experiences with the aim of highlighting the existing talent in the Valencian Community, attracting investment to the region, and creating business opportunities between corporations and startups. As a novelty of this fifth edition, the tech event will feature a B2B forum with exclusive content and activities for entrepreneurs and businesspeople: Summit Pro.

An international tech event

Since its first edition in 2018, Valencia Digital Summit has recorded exponential growth that has led it to become an internationally recognised tech event. The latest edition alone, held on the 15th and 16th of December last year, generated an economic impact of more than €4.8 million. The event, which was attended by leaders of world-renowned companies such as Airbus, Google and Amazon, as well as consolidated startups such as Jeff, Jobandtalent and Gorillas, brought together more than 5,500 people in person and more than 5,000 online. In addition, 20% of all attendees came from abroad and from up to 25 different countries.

Valencian startups arouse great interest from American investors in Miami

Not long ago, the Valencian entrepreneurial ecosystem had the chance to explore the business opportunities offered by the East Coast of the US. Startup Valencia, in collaboration with Hospitality Ventures, organised a business mission to Miami with the aim of increasing awareness about the tech projects being carried out by Valencian companies and to help them enter the US market, generate business, and scale.

This expedition, which took place over the past week, brought together 18 startups that consider the United States and Latin America to be potential markets for their products and services, as well as destinations in which to establish part of their company or seek investment from large funds.

The Valencian entrepreneurial ecosystem has focused on the USA and considers Miami to be a gateway of interest. Moreover, in recent years, the city has become a key territory for innovation and tech development on the American continent. For Josevi Villaroig, co-founder and COO of Naria, one of the participants in this mission, "the new Silicon Valley is emerging in Miami and it's evolving very fast".

The participating startups were able to learn first-hand about Florida's tech and innovation through a full schedule of visits to the key figures in the sector, including Matt Haggman, Executive VP at The Beacon Council. These meetings helped Valencian entrepreneurs learn about the requirements for opening a branch office in the United States, how to obtain investment from American funds, and what legislative rules apply in this market.

Valencian entrepreneurs aroused great interest from investors, to whom they presented their projects, such as Genesis Ventures, Taram Capital, Animo VC, The Venture City, Key International, Gold Coast Angel Investors, Silicon Valley Bank, Microsoft for Startups, Salesforce Ventures, Amazon AWS and several family offices, among others.

As explained by Nacho Mas, CEO of Startup Valencia, who was part of the mission: "the connection between Valencia and Miami has been cultivated by Startup Valencia in recent years and this expedition has been an opportunity to materialise and strengthen our relationship. Our entrepreneurs have been able to meet with leading American investment funds, banks and accelerators, as well as network with potential US business partners. We are very grateful to Mannatech and Laura González-Estéfani, founder and CEO of The Venture City, for hosting us on this mission".

The 18 tech companies participating in this mission organised by Startup Valencia were the Valencian companies ClimateTrade, ClimateCoin, Fresh People, GoKoan, Reental, Ciscar, ONiAd, Shimoku, Naria, Helloprint, WeVLC, Rosita Longevity, HechicerIA, Live4life and AR Vision, the Barcelona-based Simplr, the Portuguese company Bhout and the Miami-based startup Rookmotion, thanks to the international impact of Startup Valencia. They were also accompanied by representatives of investment funds such as GoHub Ventures, Genesis Ventures and Successful Fund, among others.

Valencia-Miami connection

As Javier Martínez Amo, CEO and co-founder of OniAd, also a participant in the mission, explains: "As of late, Miami is the city that is attracting the most capital from Latin America and the United States. After covid, thousands of people from the tech sector in San Francisco and New York moved to Miami, boosting the geographic concentration of talent and investment". Diego Moya from Climatetrade and Fernando Oñiga from Hospitality Ventures, promoters of the mission, also highlighted the fact that most of the participants concluded that "the combination of a good climate with facilities for remote work and favourable taxation are some of the keys for the development of Miami as an international tech hub".

Startup Valencia has been developing its relationship with the Florida ecosystem over the last two years, and numerous actions have been carried out over this time to strengthen this connection and highlight the work of Valencian entrepreneurs in order to make themselves more internationally known.

Last April, seven Valencian startups had the chance to participate with Startup Valencia, in collaboration with IVACE, in one of the most recognised tech events of the innovation ecosystem worldwide: eMerge Americas.

A few months earlier, within the framework of the Valencia Digital Summit 2021, the Miami Valencia Forum took place, which launched a collaboration channel between the hubs of both cities to facilitate the exchange of talent and investment and to promote international business opportunities.

Furthermore, Miami boasts one of the world's leading Blockchain Hubs, which is also establishing business connections with the more than 50 members of Startup Valencia's Blockchain Hub.

Helloprint Group increases its investments in Valencia and joins Startup Valencia to further develop the ecosystem

Helloprint, the Dutch/Spanish leading marketplace for customised printed products and their connected companies, joins Startup Valencia. The group chose Valencia already 8 years ago as their main city in Europe to rapidly develop innovative services and develop new, innovative technology companies.

Helloprint and their connected companies are becoming a new Corporate Partner of Startup Valencia. Their aim is connecting with the Valencian innovative scene and promote it by providing startups with tools and services that facilitate their internationalisation. This collaboration will begin with the involvement of Helloprint as an advisor in the hackathon The Challenge of Valencia Digital Summit 2022, a reference technological event in the Valencian Community that will be held from October 24 to 26 in the City of Arts and Sciences, where Helloprint and their connected companies will also exhibit its advanced solutions at a stand in the expo area.

Why Helloprint joins Startup Valencia

For Juan Luis Hortelano, President of Startup Valencia, "the addition of this new collaboration, with a prestigious number of companies with an international presence such as Helloprint, reinforces Valencia's position as a world-class technological hub and enriches our ecosystem by sharing its experience and business culture”.

“We chose Valencia many years ago as our main hub for international and innovative expansion”, says Hans Scheffer, CEO and Founder of Helloprint. “Currently, our Valencia operation is much bigger than our headquarters in The Netherland, which means that we are massively increasing our growth ambitions in Valencia. For us, that always goes hand-in-hand with helping the local ecosystem develop and paying back to the community that helps us grow.  With the collaboration with Startup Valencia,  we are going to support startups going through the same process that we have been years ago. Startup Valencia is the right partner to do so, since they have the feet in the Valencian ecosystem ground and will allow us to advise and mentor new companies with the same passion for internationalisation as we have.”

Internal ecosystem of entrepreneurship

The entrepreneurs behind Helloprint have built a variety of companies in the last years with a local presence in Valencia. Their largest is Helloprint itself, the world's largest marketplace for customised printed products. The technology firm has a presence in 21 countries through a network of more than 221 local partners and is not owning any printing presses themselves.

Other remarkable startups from the group with the grounds in Valencia are weWow, which provides first class customer experience to fast-growing international scale-ups; weVLC, which is changing the co-living model for expats and young international mindset professionals who want to live in sunny Valencia and have an unforgettable experience; and it's brand new Labelnone, the performance marketing dark kitchen that delivers in-house trained and developed marketing professionals to support other agencies growth.

“We strongly believe in the power of entrepreneurship, and we want to encourage people to become the best entrepreneurial version of themselves”, says Hans Scheffer. “Therefore, we’re very pleased to join Startup Valencia and do our fair share to help the Valencian ecosystem accelerate its growth”.

Startup Valencia celebrates its fifth anniversary as a benchmark for the entrepreneurial ecosystem

Startup Valencia celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. The association for the Valencian Community’s entrepreneurial ecosystem has witnessed and been involved in the growth experienced by the sector in recent years. Since its founding as a private non-profit entity in 2017, when a group of entrepreneurs decided to organise and unite to represent Valencian startups and become the benchmark for the ecosystem of tech and innovation companies, the association has hugely increased its number of members, from 20 in 2017 to 311 today, and also its number of partners, from 3 in 2019 to 26 today.

To celebrate these five years, Startup Valencia organised an event at the Veles e Vents building in the Marina of Valencia on the 7th of July. The gathering, attended by all the main agents of the ecosystem and for which more than 1,300 people signed up, started with a round table. Raúl Martín, Javier Megias and Juan Luis Hortelano, the three presidents of the association since its creation, analysed the evolution of the Valencian ecosystem over the years.

The meeting continued with the recognition of founders of the association and professionals who at some point have been part of the Board of Directors of Startup Valencia, such as Ángela Pérez, VP Life Science at Health in Code and recent winner of the Jaume I Award; Iker Marcaide, Founder of Flywire and Zubi Group; and Juan Cartagena, Founder and CEO of Hearts Radiant.

Startup Valencia fifth anniversary

Growth of the Valencian innovation ecosystem

According to Juan Luis Hortelano, president of Startup Valencia: "in parallel to the evolution of the association itself, the Valencian tech and innovation ecosystem has also grown exponentially in the last five years". According to data from the Bankinter Innovation Foundation's observatory, Valencia is the third leading tech hub in Spain, behind only Madrid and Barcelona. According to data from the Spanish Tech Ecosystem report, venture capital investment in the Valencian hub between 2014 and 2022 exceeded €600 million. This has allowed Valencian startups to grow and scale and as a consequence, the Valencian ecosystem has generated its first two unicorns (startups with a valuation of over $1 billion) thanks to the cases of Flywire, founded by Valencian Iker Marcaide, a member of the Startup Valencia board, and Fever, founded by Pep Gómez, one of the first entrepreneurs to join the association in 2017. "Another consequence is that the Valencian innovation ecosystem has managed to attract talent and tech companies from other territories during these five years, both nationally and internationally," said Hortelano in his contribution.

The figures of the Startup Observatory of the Valencian Community, a project developed since 2020 by Startup Valencia to facilitate the visibility and connection of startups with investors, companies and other organisations with the aim of accessing the best business opportunities, also show this growth of the sector. The number of registered entities has increased from 1,042 in 2020 to more than 1,400 today. Among them, startups have grown from 791 to more than 1,100 today.

As objectives for the coming years, Juan Luis Hortelano highlighted the materialisation of the project for the old harbour of La Marina led by the association: "With the development of this project, entrepreneurs, investors and companies will have a space from which to connect and build joint projects of open innovation. The aim is to create an environment that encourages collaboration and the exchange of ideas and serves as a hub for developing them," he explained. He also believes that this space will encourage greater involvement from large traditional companies, "this is another of the aspects where we must have a greater impact in the short term, in order to continue showing them the advantages of working with startups and so that they continue to perceive the value of this necessary collaboration as an evolution that is having a positive impact on society and, consequently, on their companies".

Presence on the international scene

With the aim of promoting the image of the Valencian ecosystem to the international scene and attracting talent and investment to the region, Startup Valencia has generated alliances and established a presence in some of the main tech hubs worldwide, such as Miami and its tech event eMerge Americas. The association has also achieved a prominent presence in international innovation events taking place in our country, such as DES Show in Malaga, 4YFN in Barcelona or South Summit in Madrid, as well as WMF2022 in Rimini, Italy.

In this sense, Valencia Digital Summit (VDS2022), the international flagship tech event of the Valencian Community organised by Startup Valencia, aims to bring together in its fifth edition more than 10,000 attendees from over 30 countries. Leaders of companies such as Google, Siemens or CEMEX Ventures, founding entrepreneurs of highly scalable startups such as Jeff, Internxt and JobandTalent, and international investors and key players in the ecosystem have already confirmed their participation as speakers at VDS2022, which will be held from the 24th to the 26th of October at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia.
